Terms of Use

Tank & Tankless offers general information about home water heaters; it is not professional, installation, electrical, gas or legal advice, and using the site means accepting these terms.

Using this site

You may read, print and share pages from Tank & Tankless for personal, non-commercial use. Please link to the page rather than copying it whole. The site is free to use and needs no account.

General information only

The pages explain how water heaters work, how types compare and what maker manuals and federal sources say. They are general information. They are not professional engineering, plumbing, installation, electrical, gas or legal advice, and they cannot account for the details of your home, your heater or your local code. Your heater's manual and labels come first; where a page and your manual differ, follow the manual.

Gas, electricity and safety

Water heaters involve real hazards: natural gas and propane, combustion venting and carbon monoxide, 240 V circuits, scalding water and pressure relief valves. Hire licensed trades for gas piping, venting, electrical circuits and heater replacement; this work usually requires a permit from the local building department. Never disable or bypass a safety device. If you smell gas, leave the appliance alone and call your gas supplier from outside the building.

Prices and rules change

Prices, rebates, tax credits, energy rates and efficiency rules change, sometimes quickly. Figures on this site are dated and come from the sources named on each page, but they may be out of date by the time you read them. Check current prices with sellers and installers, rebates with your utility or state energy office, and tax questions with the IRS or a tax professional. How figures are checked is explained on how these pages are made.

Changes

Pages, including these terms, may be revised at any time. The revised date on each page shows when it last changed. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms. Ownership and store links are described on ownership and store links.
